State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta announced on Oct. 31 that Philabundance Community Kitchen in North Philadelphia will receive a $76,101 grant to fight hunger.
The North Philadelphia location of Philabundance broke ground in May of this year. PCK has distributed over 4 million meals and has helped more than 850 graduates enter the workforce. The new facility, set to open in 2020, will allow for twice as many students and quadruple the amount of meals made, among other expansions.
According to Feeding America, one out of five Philadelphians suffer from food insecurity.
“Philabundance plays an integral role in eliminating food insecurities and lifting communities out of poverty,” Kenyatta, D-Phila., said in a release. “I secured this funding because I am committed to helping the nonprofit be successful and ensure the new Philabundance Community Kitchen is able to offer free job training opportunities for low-income families and produce meals for our most vulnerable neighbors.”
The Department of Economic and Community Development’s Local Share Account awarded the grant, which will be used to purchase a new generator.
DCED’s Local Share Account comes from slot machine license operation fees paid by casinos operating within the City of Philadelphia. A portion of the funds are used for economic development, neighborhood revitalization, community improvement and other projects.
