John C. Anderson Apartments wins national architecture award

The John C. Anderson Apartments have just received a national award for outstanding architecture from the American Institute of Architects.

The 56-unit affordable LGBT-friendly senior housing complex on 13th Street in the Gayborhood won the 2015 AIA Housing Award for Architecture in the “specialized housing” category.

According to the AIA awards jury, “There is complexity to the façade in the way it sits to the street and with regard to the surrounding buildings. It is compatible without resorting to mimicry. An outstanding of design that is at once substantial and modern, modest and generous.”

The jury also went on to highlight the tremendous community effort that helped forge the public-private partnership that made the project a reality and commended the LGBT community in Philadelphia for taking on the challenge of providing accommodations for its older generation.

“John C. Anderson Apartments is the first LGBT-friendly affordable senior housing project to be developed in the eastern United States with such direct community involvement,” noted the jury. “Its realization has been the source of great community pride.”
