Here Comes the Rain Again

All that rain last weekend was great, wasn’t it? No really, I’m not kidding. I love spending a rainy afternoon indoors, so I had a great time last Sunday. And as a bonus, my lawn doesn’t look like a giant piece of wheat toast anymore. It’s actually turning green again!

The rain was a fitting backdrop to the sad news I got recently that TLA Video on Locust Street will be closing its doors forever at the end of this month. They’ll still have a website, www.tlavideo.com, but I can’t tell you how much I’m going to miss the brick-and-mortar store.

Netflix is great and Redbox is convenient, but absolutely nothing in this world compares to the incredible selection at TLA. I have no idea how I’m going to throw an impromptu Greta Garbo/Chi Chi Larue film festival ever again. Sadly, last Sunday’s may have been my last …

The Big Gay Boat Party

Hopefully the skies will be clear for the next few days, because there’s still a lot of outdoor fun to be had before the end of summer. This Sunday, for example, is your last chance this year to rock the boat, baby!

The final Big Gay Boat Party of 2011 is from 6 p.m.-midnight Aug. 21 at Moshulu, 401 Columbus Blvd. Cover charge is only $10, and DJ DeeJay is back one last time to spin all your favorites and keep you dancing under the stars. And if that doesn’t float your boat, then how about that sexy shot boy?

2011 Softball World Series

Next week Philadelphia will welcome a major event — the 2011 Softball World Series, sponsored by the Amateur Sports Alliance of North America and hosted by the City of Brotherly Love Softball League.

The games will be held at West Deptford Park in Paulsboro, N.J., but there will be parties all over the Gayborhood, starting with a Kickoff Party on Aug. 21 from 4-9 p.m. at ICandy, 254 S. 12th St. A $10 cover gets you in the door, and a portion of the proceeds benefit ASANA. This party will also be co-sponsored by Ladies 2000.

Team registration will be on Aug. 23 on the pool deck at the DoubleTree Hotel, 237 S. Broad St., which makes it so easy to slip into a bikini and begin stalking your favorite players. From there it’s just a short walk to the Opening Night Party at Sisters, 1320 Chancellor St., from 9 p.m.-2 a.m. There will be hot girls, hot music, drink specials and no cover charge!

Then it’s time to get down to business. Round-robin games will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by elimination games on Friday and the championship game and closing ceremonies on Saturday.

The event will wrap up on Aug. 27 with an OutFest-style block party from 2-8 p.m. right in the middle of the Gayborhood on 13th, Locust and Camac streets. There will be live DJs, food, vendors, and even a Dunk-A-Dyke dunk tank!

Be sure to check out all the local bars as the festival spills in and out of their doors and the party stretches on long into the night.
