There is no organization more essential to bringing our community together than our community center. The William Way LGBT Community Center has been at the heart of this community since 1975. Recent events, such as the closure of the building and the stalled building project, have left many unanswered questions — chief among them: What is the path forward?
This week, Board Co-Chair Dave Huting stepped up to address some of these concerns. This is an important step toward understanding where the community center currently stands and what actions might be taken to move it forward.
William Way has been a home to countless organizations, a rallying point for discussions and forums, and a guardian of our community’s history through the John J. Wilcox, Jr. Archives. It serves as a showcase for the arts, a resource for research through its library, and a hub for many other programs too numerous to list. This community needs — and deserves — a vibrant community center. Mr. Huting’s remarks provide a foundation for beginning a broader community discussion about its future.
Over the years, the center has faced its share of growing pains, and this is another such moment. However, it should be seen as an opportunity to create a blueprint for the center’s future. Now, more than ever, we need to come together and show our support as the board reassesses the best path forward. Together, we can ensure the William Way LGBT Community Center remains a cornerstone of our community.
