LGBT orgs., city officials gather to support trans youth

A number of city officials, and representatives of local and state agencies, will gather later this week to affirm their support for local transgender youth.

The event, billed “We’ve Got Your Back,” will be held at 3:30 p.m. March 3 in the Mayor’s Reception Room of Philadelphia City Hall. It was convened by Equality Pennsylvania in response to the federal government revoking guidance that allowed transgender students to use school facilities that match their gender identity; the Philadelphia School District and other local districts said they will continue to enforce their trans-inclusive policies.

“We’ve Got Your Back,” which is open to the public, will feature remarks by:

  • Mayor Jim Kenney
  • Sharron Cooks, Equality Pennsylvania board member
  • Rue Landau, executive director of Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations
  • Heath Davis, member of the Mayor’s Commission on LGBT Affairs
  • Marla McCulloch, former board member of Philadelphia Family Pride and the parent of a transgender child
  • Deja Lynn Alvarez, member of the Mayor’s Commission on LGBT Affairs
  • Nayimah Sanchez, ACLU Transgender Advocacy Coordinator
