Protests, road closures ahead of Trump visit

The area near the Gayborhood is expected to be affected by a scheduled visit by President Donald Trump later this week.

Trump is scheduled to visit Philadelphia Thursday for the Republican Congressional Caucus, which is taking place at the Loews Hotel, at 13th and Market, from Jan. 25-27.

Starting at 6 a.m. Thursday, parking will be prohibited on:

  • 13th Street from Chestnut to Market Streets
  • Market Street from 11th Street to Juniper Street
  • 12th Street from Chestnut to Arch Street

Any cars parked on these streets will be towed to the Philadelphia Parking Authority lot at 2501 S. Weccacoe Ave. in South Philadelphia.

The affected roads will also be closed to vehicular traffic from 8 a.m. through at least 6 p.m. Thursday on, and the city warned that other local roads will be closed periodically to allow for the arrival and departure of dignitaries.

Starting at 6 a.m. Thursday, pedestrian access to the following areas will be limited, and guarded by the Secret Service:

  • 1100 and 1200 block of Market – both north and south sides
  • 12th Street from Chestnut to Filbert Streets – both east and west sides
  • 13th Street from Chestnut to Market Streets – both east and west sides

The event and Trump’s visit are expected to bring widespread protests. On Wednesday night, LGBTs and allies will demonstrate against restrictive Republican policies at the Queer Rage(r): Guerilla Dance Party. Protesters are expected to bring flash lights and glow sticks and meet at 12th and Filbert streets before proceeding to the outside of Loews Hotel.

A Resistance in Philly protest meets at 11 am. Thursday at Thomas Paine Plaza.

According to a statement from the city, a permit for a demonstration of about 3,000 people was submitted for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, thought it is unclear if that refers to the Resistance protest. The city said that it expects other non-permitted protests to continue throughout the caucus meeting.

Because of the security restrictions, Mazzoni Center’s offices at 21 S. 12th Street and the Washington West Project at 1201 Locust St. will be closed Thursday.
