Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney has broadened the ban on city-funded travel to locales that discriminate against LGBT people.
Kenney announced Monday that he was adding the state of Tennessee and Oxford, Ala., to the list of places where city-sponsored travel is prohibited. Last month, Kenney enacted bans on city-funded travel to North Carolina and Mississippi, which recently enacted restrictive anti-LGBT laws.
Tennessee has since enacted a law that allows counselors to refuse to treat LGBT patients. The city of Oxford adopted a measure that mandates people use public restrooms that correspond to their biological sex, instead of their gender identity; people found in violation of the law can face fines or jail time.
Kenney said he would lift the travel bans if the states and Oxford change their anti-LGBT policies.
The laws are the latest in a trend of anti-LGBT measures being debated around the country, particularly in the South. Kenney is among several mayors who, along with a number of governors, have banned publicly funded travel to places with anti-LGBT laws. A growing number of entertainers and musicians have also cancelled performances in those locales.
