Antigay posters found in Center City
Adapted from reporting by PGN staff
Antigay posters were found around the Gayborhood in spring of 1976 with phrases like “Kill the queers” printed on them.
The printed and handwritten posters were hung at 13th and Locust streets, 16th and Spruce streets and 12th and Arch streets. They were stamped with several forms of the Christian cross and the swastika, an emblem of Nazi Germany.
The identity of the posters’ author or authors was not known. PGN learned the posters would be shown to the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith and the Jewish Defense League. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s office also was given copies of the posters and planned to investigate.
Peer counseling begins at Penn
Adapted from reporting by PGN staff
A peer-counseling service for gay people started at the University of Pennsylvania, according to the school’s Women’s Center and Gays at Penn. It was housed at the Christian Association, 3601 Locust Walk, on campus.
The free service operated on a walk-in or phone-in basis Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Dr. William Stayton of Penn’s Marriage Council of Philadelphia trained the men and women who provided peer counseling. Women staffed the service on Tuesdays and men on Thursdays through Saturdays.
