Some of the biggest hip-hop hit-makers of the last few decades will join forces this weekend in New Jersey.
WKTU Big Hits Throwback Fest, March 26 at Prudential Center in Newark, will bring together an all-star line-up of musicians from the 1980s, ’90s and 2000s: TLC, Shaggy, Ja Rule, Bobby Brown, Stevie B, Lisa Lisa, Naughty by Nature, C&C Musical Factory, Robin S, Kevin Lyttle, Rockell and Rob Base.
The first-time event is being co-produced by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and Adam Torres Productions.
Angela Thomas of Prana Marketing and Media Relations said the number and diversity of the musicians involved in the show will likely draw music lovers of all walks of life.
“We expect a diverse audience, from those in their 20s and up,” she said. “The ’90s dance and hip-hop era is loved by a diverse group of people, from Latin to African-American, young and old, and of all lifestyles. The music is an era that was the first time urban and Latin music started breaking onto mainstream radio, setting the foundation of how diverse pop radio is today.”
Philadelphia played an integral role in that era, Thomas added — noting that the venue easily accessible to Philly by car or New Jersey Transit.
“Philly is one of the epicenters of hip hop and dance music,” she said. “This freestyle, hip hop/dance-type of music often launched in Philly first — so that means, everyone better come out to this exciting show!”
