The Kentucky clerk who has refused to issue marriage licenses over her opposition to marriage equality is now in jail.
A federal judge on Thursday found Rowan County clerk Kim Davis in contempt of court for refusing multiple orders to issue licenses.
At a hearing the day before, Davis’ attorneys proposed alternatives to having her issue licenses, such as allowing other staffers to do so or removing her name from the official license form. Attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union, however, argued that she should be found in contempt for ignoring multiple judicial mandates.
At Wednesday’s proceeding, the ACLU argued for a hefty fine, not jailtime, for Davis.
The U.S. Supreme Court this week denied Davis’ emergency request to delay a lower-court’s ruling as she appealed.
