There might not be a better way to experience the scenic countryside of Bucks County than on one of several pre-mapped, self-guided driving tours.
“Typically when people think of Bucks County they think of the countryside,” said Visit Bucks County communications director Jessica Lawlor. “That’s what we’re known for, especially our covered bridges.”
The most popular of the expeditions is probably the covered-bridge tour, Lawlor said, which takes you through 12 historic covered bridges on some of Bucks County’s most scenic roads. The Bucks County Wine Trail is also a visitor favorite: All nine wineries on the trail are family-owned and offer unique seasonal wines and vintages.
The newest addition to the driving tours is Barn Voyage!
Designed by the Heritage Conservancy, this tour takes visitors past 15 rustic and historic barns. Many of the barns on the tour are located on private property, so Lawlor cautioned that visitors should observe respectfully from a distance.
The county’s central location, Lawlor said, makes it a great fit for a self-guided driving tour.
“Bucks County has so many scenic landscapes. And we are a drive destination. People are driving here from all over. They already have their cars, so it’s the perfect way to experience our famous countryside.”
Each tour features turn-by-turn directions that are available on visitbuckscounty.com. The covered-bridge tour can easily take a full day, but can be trimmed for time if necessary. A weekend stay is recommended as the best way to really experience the trails and everything Bucks County has to offer.
All three trails are dotted with great restaurants, bed and breakfasts and attractions. Fall is the most popular time to visit because of the great fall foliage, but the scenic drives are beautiful any time of year, Lawlor said.
