Police this week arrested a Frankford man suspected in a rape and robbery allegedly stemming from an online gay-hookup site.
Douglass Spady, 26, was arrested June 7 for involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, robbery, theft, sexual assault and kidnapping.
On April 9, a 34-year-old Canadian tourist, attending an education conference and staying at the Hilton Home 2 Suites at 12th and Arch streets, invited Spady to his room through the gay male dating app Grindr.
Upon arrival, Spady pulled a gun on and allegedly sexually assaulted the victim before forcing him by gunpoint to withdraw $2,000 from five ATMs and purchase four $500 Visa gift cards.
Spady, of the 5200 block of Cottage Street, is set to appear in court June 26 and is being held on $1-million bail.
Spady has an arrest record that includes harassment, making terroristic threats, theft and possession of marijuana.
Grindr may have also played a role in the April murder of a 25-year-old Philadelphia man. Police spokesperson Lt. John Stanford said investigators “will look into any possible connection to any other incidents, but at this time they don’t appear to be connected. However, our Special Victims Unit will work with Chester authorities if needed during that investigation.”
