Philadelphia plays host to pet fashion show, benefits animal rescue

It is no surprise that Philadelphia’s LGBT community loves its animals. Every year at Pride events, dogs take the spotlight and local adoption agencies get the word out about animal rescue. This weekend, a local animal-rescue organization will be recognized at a pet fashion show that is expected to draw high participation from the LGBT community. The Pet Support Phashion Charity Affair will start at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at Hyatt at the Bellevue, 200 S. Broad St. The event will spotlight and raise funds for Humane Law Enforcement for its charitable work to save animals from danger. Greta Russo, CEO of Lotus Event Designs, Inc., said she started the fundraiser last year to heighten awareness and support of Humane Law Enforcement. “I am a huge animal lover and had the opportunity to go on a drive-through with them,” Russo said. “I saw first-hand what they do, what they face and the frustration. Every day, they are out there rescuing animals from people who don’t care.” Russo said the agency’s efforts, and the issue of animal cruelty overall, don’t get enough attention. “You hear it on the news but not that much. You hear more about Britney Spears than you do about an animal that has been burned to death. I wanted to bring animal cruelty more to the forefront of people’s mind,” she said. Last year’s successful show returns with a new theme. The inaugural show was themed Pets in the City, a takeoff of “Sex in the City,” while this weekend’s event is titled “Angels.” Russo said she picked the theme because the members of Human Law Enforcement, like angels, protect animals. In keeping with the theme, the event will include a series of drag performances paying tribute to “fallen angels” — late great pop divas. Russo said she has received substantial support from the LGBT community. “This year, we are hoping to get a lot more of the LGBT community in attendance. A lot of the LGBT community have pets more than they do children,” she said. The event will begin with a cocktail hour at 6:30 p.m., followed by the fashion show from 8:30-9:30 p.m. and an afterparty from 10-midnight. Special guests will include District Attorney Seth Williams, Philadelphia Eagles safety Nate Allen, Pennsylvania Sen. Tony Payton Jr. and Fox 29 anchor Mike Jerrett. The Philadelphia Boys Choir will perform and Russo said a special celebrity guest will also take the stage. Drag performers include The Goddess Isis, Misty Maven, Porcelain and Omyra Lynn. The drag queens will honor the likes of Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, Donna Summer and Aliyah. The Goddess Isis was contacted a few months ago to perform at the event. “It sounded completely awesome and I was definitely on board,” she said. “I’ve always been an animal lover and have always had pets, so it seemed so natural to me.” Isis said her performance will honor not only late celebrities but also pets and animals that have passed. “It is going to be a pretty incredible tribute,” she said. The cats and dogs featured in the fashion-show portion of the evening all auditioned for the spots. “People came from all over, from as far as New York and Maryland. We have professionals and amateur dog models,” Russo said. Among the animal models are Bocker the labradoodle, who was featured in the movie, “Eat Pray Love”; Tuffy the Chihuahua, best known for his colored mohawk; and Moose the Bernese Mountain Dog, who visits schools for disabled children. A fashion show would be nothing without fashion designers. Russo said she has collaborated with some of the world’s top animal-clothing designers. Those featured in the show are Genny Perez, designer of Milou Couture and Conchita Couture; cat-clothing designer Ada Nieves; and Olga Zablinskaya, an internationally renowned groomer. Human-clothing designer Jackie Myles of Todd Anthony Couture will be on hand to outfit human models. Russo said the event is open to everyone and that she expects a big turnout. “It’s for everyone who loves animals — whether you own them or you work in the animal community. It is for everyone who has compassion for animals,” she said. For more information on the event, visit www.PetSupportPHL.com.
