The Main Event

You’ll never believe this.

Remember how I tried to get tickets a few weeks ago to take my mom to the Barbra Streisand concert? Well, I’ve heard that concert venues sometimes release new seats a few days before a show, so I checked back a few times.

Four days before the concert I struck pay dirt — new seats were available, and they didn’t cost a fortune. Oh my God! I snatched some up and got ready to surprise my mom with an early birthday present. So excited! I was actually going to be able to take my mom to see one of her all-time favorite performers.

When I called mom and told her the good news, the phone line got quiet. She appreciated it, she said, but she was really sorry she wouldn’t be able to go with me. On the night of the concert she would be in the middle of prepping for a routine colonoscopy. I couldn’t believe it. I asked if there was any way she could reschedule the procedure, but she said she couldn’t.

Man … what a bummer.

There should be a special word in the gay lexicon to describe how it feels when you want to take your mom to see Barbra Streisand but she can’t make it because she’s cleansing her colon.

Because crappy, while pretty close, just doesn’t quite cover it.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Let’s do the Time Warp again, from 7-10 p.m. Oct. 12 at the William Way Community Center, 1315 Spruce St. Transylvanian Nipple Productions will perform the show live directly in front (or maybe just a jump to the left!) of the screen while the movie plays. It’ll be just like the old State Theater in Newark, Del., when I was in high school.

Cover charge is only $10 for center members or $12 for non members.

Costumes are strongly encouraged and, of course, don’t forget to bring toilet paper, rice, water spray bottles, newspapers and toast!

Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus Fall Ball

Don’t miss PGMC’s first-annual black-tie-optional fundraiser from 7:30-11 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Ethical Society of Philadelphia, 1906 Rittenhouse Square. There will be a cocktail reception, silent auction, live music and performances, and a full-out masquerade ball.

Tickets start at $65, and some include open bar. All proceeds benefit PGMC. See www.pgmc.org for more details.

Freak Boutique

Halloween Skate Party

Skate a little lower now at the Halloween Skate Party, 8:30-10:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at Cherry Hill Skating Center, 664 Deer Road, Cherry Hill, N.J. Proceeds benefit the Liberty Belle Invitational, the annual bowling tournament held in Philadelphia on July 4. There will be a costume contest with fabulous prizes, but make sure your costume is roller-friendly and won’t trip up your skates! Cover charge is $10 and skate rental is $3, or you can bring your own.

Our Night Out Tea Dance

Catch up with the gang from Our Night Out from 4:30-7 p.m. at Tavern on Camac, 243 S. Camac St., at their annual tea dance. They’ll have great music, great food and great people. If you’re old enough to remember tea dance, then get out there and relive some great memories, and if you’re not, then go see what you’ve been missing!

Spruce Ups and Face Lifts

If it seems like almost every bar in the Gayborhood has gotten a little work done in the last couple of years, you’re right, and now you can add two more to the list. Check out the second floor at The Bike Stop, where they’ve redone the floor and spruced up the walls. They’ve also added super-cool new iPad registers on every floor that take credit and debit using the “Square” card reader dongle that plugs into tablets and smart phones.

If you haven’t been to U Bar recently (the bar formerly known as Uncle’s), drop everything and go this weekend. You need to see what Stephen and Dennis have done with the place. New floors, new bar, new lighting and a huge new wall of enormous windows overlooking Camac Street have transformed this neighborhood favorite and made it even better. n
