Somehow, it’s already August. Wasn’t just last week Pride? Though it seems like the dog days of summer are upon us, the city hasn’t been quite as quiet as it could be. (See the page 1 story on youth mobs in the Gayborhood.)
If you’ve been hibernating in the house, complaining there’s nothing to do in Philly in the summer, well, you aren’t paying attention.
This weekend will be Philadelphia’s first (annual?) SlutWalk, kicking off at 11 a.m. Aug. 6 from Kahn Park. Also on Aug. 6 is LGBT night H20 at Hurricane Harbor Six Flags.
In town this weekend is the annual LGBT skydiving event, Rainbow Boogie.
If you are looking to hit the shore, and looking for the ladies, Caesars in Atlantic City, N.J., is hosting Original Sin, a women’s weekend with beach parties, evening parties, a pool party and an all-female poker tournament, Aug. 5-7.
On the arts front, this weekend is the kick-off of GayFest and the closing of the Phreak N’ Queer festival.
If you didn’t get enough Pride in June, there are still Pride events to be had. On Aug. 14, Northeast Pennsylvania Pride Fest will be held in Kirby Park in Kingston, near Wilkes-Barre, a mere two hours away. The following weekend, Greater Lehigh Valley Pride will be held Aug. 21 at Cedar Beach Park in Allentown, only about an hour away. Next month, Delaware Pride will be at Rehoboth Beach on Sept. 17, two-and-a-half hours away.
Closer to home, there’s still time to get some sports action in: The Falcons start their fall league this week. And the Liberty Tennis Association is hosting the Atlantic Cup Aug. 5-7 at Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Center. If you prefer to be a spectator, the women’s world softball series is coming to town Aug. 23-27. Also that week will be Gay Community Night at the Phillies, Aug. 26. Tickets in the LGBT section are sold out, but the game is not. (I guess we hit the gay quota.)
For PGN staff, we’ll be attending the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association annual convention, in town Aug. 25-28. (As co-chair of the convention, this writer is looking forward to seeing the culmination of all of our work come to fruition.)
Colours Organization Inc. is also hosting a community-appreciation picnic, Aug. 21.
There’s also a few parties, fundraisers and balls coming this month, including Boys of Summer, Arouse, Libertine Ball, Big Gay Boat Party and Scene.
