Pioneering LGBT activist Frank Kameny (standing) rode past Independence Hall in last weekend’s Fourth of July parade, along with activist Randy Wicker (from right) and PGN publisher Mark Segal. Kameny and Wicker were among a handful of demonstrators who protested outside Independence Hall on the Fourth of July 45 years ago, calling for LGBT rights in what came to be an annual event now signified by a historical marker at Sixth and Chestnut streets. The group, along with the Philadelphia Freedom Band and DC Cowboys, marked the first LGBT contingent ever to be included in the parade. LGBT bowlers from around the country converged July 3 at Laurel Lanes in Maple Shade, N.J., for the annual Liberty Belle Invitational Tournament. A portion of the proceeds from the two-day, 22nd annual tournament went to benefit Mazzoni Center. About 100 people mixed and mingled with the DC Cowboys July 3 before the troupe’s performance at the William Way LGBT Community Center. The Cowboys, who were in town to march in the Fourth of July parade the following day, performed both at the center and later at The Bike Stop, and raised over $1,000 for Philadelphia FIGHT. The following day, LGBTs enjoyed a Fourth of July potluck feast in the air-conditioned William Way LGBT Community Center. Scott Drake
