My husband, Jason, and I have been wearing “Harris-Walz” shirts in public as often as possible. I’ve even worn them to events where a suit would usually be expected, and I’m often the only one dressed so casually. But that’s the point, right? Wearing a shirt with a message is meant to start conversations.
Jason, after looking at the shirt, wanted to make a stronger statement than simply showing support for Vice President Kamala Harris. He had several ideas on how we could modify the message, all based on those little tabs in polls that suggest it’s going to be a close election. As political enthusiasts, we dive into those tabs, which reveal not just why someone supports a candidate but, more importantly, what motivates undecided and independent voters.
Jason’s first idea was “Tough Guys for Harris,” but we quickly realized that could be interpreted in various ways. As we analyzed the data, listened to pundits, and observed Republican candidate Donald Trump’s supporters, we noticed something interesting.
Trump’s constant attacks on Democrats — especially since Harris became the Democratic candidate for president — focus on the idea that he supports the country, while she supposedly will destroy it. His supporters don’t dive into the specifics of the issues, but in those polling tabs, one word tells the story: patriotism. Due to the overwhelming media coverage, many swing voters now believe that Trump, not Harris, is the patriotic candidate.
It seems Harris got the message, which is why the theme of patriotism was front and center at the Democratic National Convention — with flags and speeches emphasizing it.
So, don’t be surprised if you see Jason and me wearing homemade shirts that say, “Patriots for Harris.” A message to the campaign: the slogan might be something you should offer on the official website. Because the people who want freedom for LGBTQ+ people, respect for women’s healthcare, and free and fair elections are the true patriots. They’re the ones who value what makes this country great.
