Regional LGBT leaders are responding to the mass shooting early this morning that left at least 50 dead and even more wounded at a popular gay club in Orlando.
Franny Price, executive director of Philly Pride Presents, opened this year’s Pride parade today in the Gayborhood with a moment of silence for the victims.
Before the event began, Nellie Fitzpatrick, director of the city Office of LGBT Affairs, said on Facebook that Philadelphia police have no indication of any threats for today’s Pride.
But, she added, the police “will be taking all necessary precautions for today’s parade and festival to ensure a safe event for everyone.”
“As we all learn more about the tragedy and horror that unfolded last night, please take time to care for each other,” Fitzpatrick said. “As always, if you see something, say something. Be alert and be safe.”
The Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center in Allentown is also hosting a vigil tonight at 6 p.m. at Candida’s Bar, 247 N. 12th St., Allentown. Speakers will include LGBT leaders and elected officials to memorialize the victims and discuss gun violence.
“Violence against the LGBT community is a serious issue,” Adrian Shanker, executive director of Bradbury Sullivan, said in a statement adding, “The LGBT movement needs to prioritize efforts to prevent violence, including support for meaningful and common sense gun control.”
Shanker said the anti-LGBT laws in states like North Carolina and Mississippi fosters hateful rhetoric that can spur people to violence against the LGBT community.
“Concrete action is needed,” he said, “action to ensure that our bars, pride festivals and community celebrations are safe to attend.”
