‘Popesicles’ to fundraise for LGBT cause

As the papal weekend approaches, two local companies are using Pope Francis’ progressive persona to fundraise for LGBT youth.

Communications agency Tierney and popsicle store Lil Pop Shop are teaming up to present “Popesicles.” Organizers say the frozen rainbow treats were inspired by Pope Francis’ record of embracing equality.

Popesicle proceeds will be donated to The Trevor Project, a national nonprofit that supports LGBT youth through crisis-intervention services and advocacy programs.

A mobile pop-up shop will be selling the treats from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 25 at 13th and Locust, with special guest “Mr. Popesicle,” a life-sized version of the dessert who will encourage passersby to donate and spread the word about the effort through social media.

Popesicles will also be sold throughout the weekend at the Lil Pop Shop at 265 S. 44th St.
