Area animal events abound

In honor of our pet issue and our two-,four-, six- or eight-legged friends and companions, we have compiled a list of events in the area catering to pet owners and animal lovers alike. So get out there and have some fun with the animal kingdom.

Pet pictures with Santa Animal Medical Center hosts pet pictures with Santa Paws, 2-4 p.m. Nov. 17 at 25 W. Third Ave., Collegeville. Pictures are $12 and all proceeds benefit Stray Cat Blues, a nonprofit, no-kill cat rescue group in Montgomery County. Talk to the Animals Day: Dr. Dolittle Meet & Greet The Media Theatre hosts Talk To The Animals Day with actor Bill Vargus from its production of “Dr. Dolittle,” 2-4 p.m. Nov. 17 at 104 E. State St., Media. Anyone who brings their pet to the theater during the event will receive a $5 gift voucher for an upcoming production and have plenty of photo opportunities. Owls: Silent Hunters of the Night Chester County Department of Parks and Recreation hosts the free event to teach about owls of the area via slide shows, pellets and mounts, followed by a moonlit walk through the meadow to the forest edge as a guide calls in Pennsylvania’s Eastern Screech Owl, the nighttime hunter most likely to be seen and heard this time of the year, 6-7:30 p.m. at Warwick County Park, 191 County Park Road, Pottstown. Free dentistry seminar Ayuda Community Center hosts a seminar to help pet owners understand some essential concepts in veterinary dentistry, 7 p.m. Nov. 19, 4400 N. Marshall St. For more information, call 215-329-5777.

Live Animal Discovery Weekend The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is celebrating its bicentennial this year and offering limited-time, behind-the-scenes tours of its world-renowned collections Nov. 23-25, 1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The tours are normally open to researchers by appointment only. Attendees can go behind the glass in the Florence R. Foerderer Live Animal Center and meet some of the 100 animal ambassadors, including hawks, owls, falcons, opossums, skunks, alligators and a variety of turtles, tortoises, snakes and lizards.
