City, community hit by Sandy

The city came to a halt Monday, as city agencies, schools and public transportation shut down in preparation for a direct hit from Hurricane Sandy. Among the casualties of the storm was the groundbreaking event for the proposed LGBT-friendly senior residences, which was postponed until next month. The groundbreaking was not the only LGBT event impacted. All services and programs at Gay and Lesbian Latino AIDS Education Initiative, Philadelphia FIGHT, Mazzoni Center and AIDS Services in Asian Communities were shut down Monday. William Way LGBT Community Center planned to be closed both Monday and Tuesday. The groundbreaking ceremony had been planned for noon Oct. 29, in the middle of the storm, but organizers have rescheduled it to 11 a.m. Nov. 9. The ceremony, held at 249-257 S. 13th St., is open to the public. Crews have spent the past few weeks demolishing the building used by the city’s Redevelopment Authority for vehicles and equipment to make way for a new property that will house 56 one-bedroom units for those 62 and over. The $20-million project is being spearheaded by the Dr. Magnus Hirschfield Fund with Pennrose Properties. The site is expected to open late next year.
