Putting Philly’s LGBT community on the map

This week, our community is hosting not one but two national LGBT conventions/events. It’s a tribute to our community, and especially our LGBT tourism caucus, that worked diligently to have Philly chosen among the numerous other choice cities.

Philly was chosen because it is one of the most gay-friendly cities in the nation and offers many amenities that others cannot. We have a very lively and organized gay community and a nightlife of which many cities would be envious. This seems to be recognized more by outsiders than by residents. So to all you naysayers out there, give it a break and realize that you live in a very special place.

Rather than complain, why not make it a point to get out there this weekend and welcome our guests? There are many public events you can participate in, or just walk over to a group that you note is from out of town and say, “Welcome, we’re glad to have you here.”

One of the visiting groups should bring a lot of news about us to the nation, since that group comprises the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. These are the LGBT writers, editors, producers, etc., working in mainstream and LGBT media.

The convention is so high-level and profiled that the keynote speakers are NBC “Today Show” host Ann Curry, CNN’s Don Lemon and Dr. Daniel Baer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and the highest-ranking openly gay employee in the department.

On the other side of the spectrum, we have the Amateur Sports Alliance of North America in town. They are holding the women’s softball world series in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection, bringing with them about 1,500 teammates, friends and family.

Later this year, we’ll host other national conferences. Why? Because Philadelphia is a major LGBT destination and meeting city. And the reason for that is we realized early that to host the world, you had to create a first-class LGBT community. And I personally thank each of you who have helped put Philly on the map. Take Pride Philly, you’re one of the best!
