Gayborhood Crime Watch

The following incidents in the Midtown Village and Washington Square West areas were reported to the 6th Police District between July 18-29. Information is courtesy of 6th District Capt. INCIDENTS

— At 2:50 a.m. July 18, a woman was at 10th and Pine streets when a male accosted her, took her handbag and fled. The offender was described as a black male, 20s, with a thin build.

— At 12:21 p.m. July 18, someone stole a bicycle from the upstairs hallway of the 12th Street Gym, 204 S. 12th St. The incident was caught on video and the offender was described as a black male, in his 30s with a dark complexion, medium build and short hair, beard and mustache, and wearing a white T-shirt and black shorts.

— At 11:10 a.m. July 20, a woman was in the 7-11 at 801 Walnut St. when another female bumped into her; she later discovered her wallet was missing from her handbag. The suspect was described as a black female, 40 years old, heavy set and wearing a yellow dress and slacks.

— At 4 p.m. July 20, a woman saw a male steal her secured bicycle from outside 1022 Pine St. The suspect was described as a black male, 6-foot, 220 pounds, bald and wearing sunglasses and cargo shorts. He was last seen heading south on 10th Street.

— Between 9-10 p.m. July 21, someone smashed the window of a 2002 Toyota, parked in the 900 block of Spruce Street, and stole a GPS. This report was received by the DPR Unit via phone, thus police were not dispatched.

— At 1:30 p.m. July 22, a man was boarding the No. 42 SEPTA bus at 1300 Walnut St. when a male bumped into him, took his wallet from his rear pants pocket and fled east on Walnut. The offender was described as a black male, 6-foot, with a heavy build and dark complexion.

— At 6:40 a.m. July 23, complainant was in the PATCO Subway, 1200 Locust St., when a male and female approached and demanded money. He complied and the suspects fled west on Locust. The male was only described as black.

— Between 10 p.m. July 22 and 9 a.m. July 24, someone stole the license plate from a 2001 Ford parked in the 800 block of Pine Street.

— At 11:48 p.m. July 26, a man was walking and texting in the 1200 block of Walnut Street when two males approached, punched him and took his BlackBerry and fled north through the parking lot. The offenders were described as black males in their 20s. One was 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds with a medium complexion, short hair and wearing a gray shirt and dark pants. The other was 5-foot-10 with no further description.

— Between 11:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m. July 26, someone stole a secured bicycle from outside 111 S. 11th St.

— Between 10 p.m.-midnight July 26, someone unzipped the window of an out-of-towner’s 2008 Jeep parked in the 1100 block of Spruce Street and stole a laptop, GPS and wallet. This report was received by the DPR Unit via phone, thus police were not dispatched.

— Between 10:30 p.m. July 26 and 7 a.m. July 27, someone entered an unlocked 2005 Toyota, parked in the 200 block of South Jessup Street, and stole a spare key to a neighbor’s car, a 1994 Volkswagen, from the glove box. The Volkswagen was also stolen but recovered intact in the 1000 block of Clinton Street. Sixth District Officer Kelly attempted to lift fingerprints.

— At 7:20 p.m. July 27, complainant was approached at 13th and Locust streets by a male who demanded money. When the victim attempted to walk away, the male pushed him down, took his wallet and fled into the PATCO subway. The suspect was described as a black male, 20-30 years old, 6-foot and wearing a white T-shirt and tan shorts.

— At 12:30 a.m. July 28, complainant was intoxicated and, while at 12th and Pine streets, a male removed his wallet from his back pocket and walked away. The suspect was described as a black male, 40 years old, 5-foot-7 and wearing a white T-shirt, shorts and a dark hat.

— At 4:47 p.m. July 28, a male entered an office on the ninth floor of Pennsylvania Hospital, 801 Spruce St., and took computer equipment. He was confronted by a security officer, but fled down a fire escape. The suspect was described as a black male, 5-foot-8 and bald and wearing a red shirt, blue jeans and a green backpack. Sixth District Officer Keenan lifted fingerprints.

— Between 5-10 a.m. July 29, someone pushed in a window air-conditioning unit of an apartment in the 1300 block of Pine Street, entered the apartment and stole jewelry and cash. Sixth District Officer Chim lifted fingerprints.

— At 1:55 p.m. July 29, a male walked out of Dunkin’ Donuts, 1324 Walnut St. with business’ hand truck. The suspect was described as a black male, 40s, bald, with a dark complexion and wearing a white polo shirt and dark shorts.

ARRESTS

— At 3:50 p.m. July 19, a witness saw a male cut a lock off a bicycle outside 302 S. 13th St. and ride off going south. Following a 911 call, 6th District Officers stopped a male who was identified by the witness and recovered the bicycle. The 53-year-old suspect with a South Philadelphia address was taken to Central Detectives for investigation; theft charges are pending the locating of the owner of the bicycle.

— At 9:50 a.m. July 21, 6th District officers arrested a 21-year-old female inside the Independence Hotel, 1234 Locust St., for domestic assault.

— At 11:10 a.m. July 21, a man was with a male known to him by first name only who took him to the rear of the 1100 block of Pine Street to talk, and instead, produced a handgun and took an iPhone and some cash. The offender was described as a black male, 25 years old, 6-foot, with a thin build and dark complexion and wearing a baseball cap, jeans and white T-shirt. Central Detectives were able to identify the suspect and 6th District Officers Duncan and Burrell took him into custody at 10:05 p.m. July 23 in the 300 block of South 10th Street. The 23-year-old suspect with a local address was charged with robbery and related offenses.

— At 8:45 p.m. July 23, 6th District officers arrested a male for a summary offense outside 1300 Irving St.

— At 9:10 p.m. July 23, 6th District Officers Fererro and Kovach saw a female in the 800 block of Sansom Street they knew was wanted for a June 21 theft of a backpack and wallet from the Alexander Inn, 301 S. 12th St. The 37-year-old suspect with a West Philadelphia address was charged with theft and related offenses.

— At 11:20 p.m. July 26, complainants were at 1200 Manning St. when four males approached, punched one and pushed the other and took a purse and fled south on 13th Street. Sixth District Sergeant Newsome stopped one of the males and recovered the purse at 13th and Spruce streets. The 23-year-old suspect with a North Philadelphia address was charged with robbery and related offenses. The other three suspects were described only as black males in their 20s.

— At 10:50 p.m. July 26, a motorist was driving in the 300 block of South 12th Street and their car was struck on the hood by a glass cup. Sixth District Officer DeLuca was called to the scene and determined that the glass came from a seventh-floor window of the Alexander Inn, 301 S. 12th St. A 40-year-old female and 34-year-old male, both from out-of-town, were taken into custody and charged with reckless endangerment of another person and related offenses.

— At 7:40 a.m. July 27, Center City District Officers arrested a male inside Dunkin’ Donuts, 1100 Walnut St. for a summary offense.

— At 1:15 a.m. July 28, a female attacked two people inside Woody’s Bar, 202 S. 13th St., biting one and scratching the other. Sixth District Officers Duncan and Burrell responded to the call and took her into custody. The 21-year-old suspect with a South Philadelphia address was charged with aggravated assault and related offenses.

— At 5:45 a.m. July 28, complainant was in the 1300 block of Spruce Street when a male walked up and asked to use his cell phone. As he dialed a number, the male struck the complainant and took his bag and fled. Sixth District Officer Loggia stopped the male running east on Spruce and he was positively identified. The 44-year-old suspect with a South Philadelphia address was charged with robbery and related offenses.

—On July 29, physical evidence collected at the scene of a July 16 attack at Ninth and Spruce streets confirmed the identity of the suspect to be Willie Wyche, who was arrested on July 20 for a similar attack in the 700 block of Lombard Street on July 10. The suspect was charged with attempted homicide, burglary and related offenses. Additional charges are pending completion of the investigation.

— At 9 p.m. July 29, several reports of “flash mob” incidents were reported in the Broad Street Corridor, between Locust and Sansom streets and 13th and 15th. One male was assaulted and his cell phone was taken at 15th and Sansom streets by a group of teenage black males. The group moved south and then east, assaulting several people along the way. At Juniper and Walnut streets, a complainant was assaulted and four males in the group were apprehended by 6th and 9th District police. The suspects, ages 11-19, were charged with multiple counts of robbery, aggravated assault and related offenses.
