Paddlers needed for Dragon Boat race

Team Philadelphia, the umbrella agency for LGBT sports teams in the city, is seeking men and women to join its award-winning crew team for the upcoming Independence Dragon Boat Regatta.

The race, held June 4, pits teams of 20 rowers against one another on the Schuylkill River.

The Team Philadelphia group, comprised of athletes from the organization’s myriad sports clubs, won the silver medal in its division in 2009 and 2010.

Team Philadelphia will compete in the Mixed Division, which requires teams to have a minimum of eight female participants.

The entrance fee is $80, which includes three training sessions, participation in three races at the Regatta, an official Team Philadelphia shirt, and food and drinks at the event.

FIGHT to open computer center

Philadelphia FIGHT will celebrate the launch of its new computing center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony next week.

FIGHT will open the first of 27 computing centers it’s slated to oversee with a reception from 3-5 p.m. April 26 at FIGHT’s offices, 1233 Locust St., on the third floor.

The program is the result of an $18.2-million grant from the federal stimulus package.

The grant allows for a total of 77 centers in the city, which are expected to reach 15,000 individuals.

The FIGHT center will offer 10 computers that will be open for free from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with classes at various times throughout the week.

Congressman Bob Brady (D-1st Dist.) and Mayor Nutter are expected to attend the event.
