A person thought to be a transgender woman was murdered last weekend in the city’s Frankford section.

The victim was found early Sept. 3 in a wooded area near the 1100 block of Adams Avenue with a gunshot wound to the head.

The victim, described in the police report as a man in woman’s clothing, was African-American and between 25-30. Police have identified the victim but are not releasing the name pending family notification.

Deputy Commissioner Stephen Johnson, LGBT liaison for the Philadelphia Police Department, said the victim made a purchase at the Wawa on Castor Avenue, about a half-mile from the crime scene, prior to the murder.

It is unclear whether the store had surveillance cameras.

Johnson said investigators believe the victim may have been a sex worker.

As of presstime, no motive and no suspects were identified.

Please note that PGN is working on updating this story ASAP; we are currently waiting confirmation from the police on the identity of the victim, and to get more details. When confirmed, we will publish a new story with as much information as we have.

there's your problem you keep waiting on insensitive confirmation from an insensitive organization ...like all these comments mean nothing... if you continue to act in this manner it would amaze me how anyone would continue to respect your company as a representation of the philadelpia lgbt community.....the wording in this article alone has tones of not respecting members in our community on a whole ..."the victim" was not a "sex worker"...but may have done some things to survive as it often happens to alot of transwomen because they rarely get the chance to get an equal shot at the job opportunities out here ... that is not what the this was about ... it is about the senseless murder of a human being who, regardless of what was believed, deserved better than this ....

i just want to add, that as a GAY news paper, u should have checked your facts, knowing more then the heterosexual world about gay, drag, and transgender matters. if i worked for the paper, and got a police report stating this, i would have check into it more to find out if this was what policed had stated , a man dressed like a woman, but in this case it wasn't, this was a transgender beautiful woman, with a family, a mother and a grandmother who loved her, adopted family who loved her and are very hurt by this murder, not to mention the out rage of the transgender community that in this day no one knows the difference of a man dressed like a woman and someone who is transgender, we except this from the str8 world, but not from our own kind, i am a gay men, i am not transgender, but a fully support my transgender brothers and sisters.

I was going to comment earlier, but apparently, the page went down for a few hours and couldn't get back on a computer.

However, the way this story is written is representative of the racism, classism, and transphobia which has unfortunately been all too common in the Gayborhood. I will always remember that day in the LGBT police liaison commission meeting hearing a bunch of people privileged enough to afford to live in the Gayborhood flapping their gums about punishing sex workers, if these people even went to the neighborhood where Kyra was killed for 5 seconds, you would flee in terror. There are much worse crimes than being a sex worker.

Now, it appears that Kyra was most likely NOT a sex worker, but even if she was, there was no reason to include that "suspicion" in your paper. As an African-American transwoman, she had likely faced more than enough discrimination and wrongful assumptions to last a hundred lifetimes, she gets murdered, and the media stereotype has to stereotype her as some form of sexual deviant. I am sickened right now.

RIP Kyra, I never knew you, but I know it could have been anyone whose sun set too soon that night.

Hello Jen my name is Wanda Rosado Dawn Herold is my BF her son Kyra Cordova Kruz was not working for sex as Mr. Johnson said he worked in that area for the home depot store ( so he had a Job ) and he only talked to people he would trust we believe somebody he knew took advantage of his kindness and probably wanted more believe to be a straight man Kyra bought 3 sandwiches 3 drinks. She would never leave home with out her pocket book NEVER they took that along with her identifications her debt card and her phone. The person who did this was a coward a person with no soul The Devil cause he was afraid probably of what he felt and used it against her and humiliated her with some friends shot her with out her knowing it was coming and left her to die like a animal in the streets this person did not have the nerve to confront his frustration cause Kyra would have Never died with out a fight she was not afraid of anyone I saw him grown up from 8 yrs old and I saw his transition he was wonderful at the age of 12 he was already developing breast and I saw him wear his moms clothe and we would laugh and think he was just growing up it would go away apparently not, we never judged him we let him be Her Kyra she found herself.. Sleep well Baby we will miss you..

The crime is that this beautiful, young, promising trans woman was murdered and Jordan Gwendolyn Davis is still stalking the streets. Don't trans women of color deserve better than to have Miss Davis claim to speak for them. Maybe if she had some class Davis could be of value to herself or even LGBT people but ya can't polish a turd.

as a news medium dedicated to the plight of the lgbT community.... i find your coverage of this crime appalling, in the fact that you would actually print this piece of an article the way that you did...where was your research beyond a shoddy police report ... KYRA KRUZ was a young, well educated, transwoman who has held jobs like the washington west project as an HIV/STD tester/counselor with the trans health iniative project and a few other places that where not what they "BELIEVED TO BE...", who like most trans women of color struggled to survive in this city facing violence just for being transgendered ....it's a good thing that you people are distributed as a free rag because this type of thing could cause a boycott.... YOU HAVE GOT TO DO BETTER!!!!! THIS HAPPENED IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD AND YOU CAN GIVE SOME NEWS THAT HAPPENED IN NIGERIA BETTER COVERAGE...REALLY?!? OH WAIT NO YOU DIDN'T...any how i admonish you and implore you to treat your articles with more tact...

Do you know for in fact she may or may not have been a sex worker?? And what would that have to do with her being murdered??? That was just an insensitive thing to print during her family and friends time of grieving ... I can let you know about her ... She was a son/daughter to some, a great friend to others , an outstanding performer and a beautiful person inside and out !!!! Hope when it comes time to write an article about her you use better words to describe her.

(not one mention if sex work or being a man dressed as a women....just because thats what the police stated doesnt mean you need to repeat it.....show some respect to the trans* community and use the proper terms PGN)

This is yet another tragedy for our community.

I am not understanding how the PGN could even have the gulls to write such a "shady" article.

I do not understand why every single transwoman that gets murdered and/or dies has to be a "sex worker."

And regardless if Kyra Kruz was a sexworker, what does that have to do with her being murdered?

Did you ever think she was still a beautiful woman with a heart of gold that was oh so suddenly cut short?

THINK BEFORE YOU WRITE THIS NEXT ONE......

I am glad to hear that this article is going to be re-written. The Philadelphia Inquirer rewrote theirs and it is much better. Many of us are in pain with the loss of our friend. The fact that we have to go through this with the PGN amongst the rest of the horrid press core just adds to our pain and fuels our anger. The resistance the PGN displays in addressing this issue coupled with its persistence to constantly do the hurtful thing is seemingly sociopathic and narcissistic. Get with the 21st Century, before you get passed bye.
